“After School Chinese”, a 52-episode series, aims to teach children aged from 6-12, how to speak simple Chinese. In a pleasant learning atmosphere of 15 minutes per episode, viewers can learn about 10 new words and 1 or 2 sentence patterns.
Each episode has one or two situational conversations that happen in places familiar to school children.
The host of the program is Donald Holder, a former primary school president from the United States. He uses English to explain the content of the lessons. His humorous performance has received excellent response from viewers both young and old.
Each of the new words has an English translation and is written in Chinese characters and Pin Yin. Then the viewers see the word pronounced by two native Chinese speakers.
Afterwards the host explains the new word in English and he will teach the viewers how to memorize the word in an easy way.
After teaching new words in a lesson, the situational conversation is repeated and then the sentence patterns will be taught in the same way as the new words, except without Pin Yin.
The host of the program will explain how to use the sentence in the right situation and inform the viewers how to avoid making mistakes.
Following the sentence patterns, substitutions will be introduced and the viewers can learn the various uses of a sentence pattern.
Review lessons are given every five episodes. The review lessons are hosted by Mr. Donald Holder and Xiao Hua, a primary school student. Through their humorous bilingual dialogues, viewers can go back to what they have learned in the past five sessions.
Some Tang poems and tongue twisters are taught in the series so that viewers can feel the rhythm of the Chinese language.
In the last edition, a Chinese song is taught. The music video ends the learning journey of “ After School Chinese”.
