Yiwu Megamarket--The Inside Stories of the Outsiders
Yann has long been accustomed to Chinese food because the courses in the French business institute where Yann studied included a 3-month study in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, and a 7-month study in Shanghai. He even began to appreciate the differences between French and Chinese food.
Seeking tirelessly up and down the markets is a have-to case, which Yann however, takes great pleasure in.
Recently, a kind of levitating globes aided by electromagnet has magnetized Yann. It is his second visit where he intends to draw a comparison of designs and prices. He will then send home some digital photographs of this product.
During his discovery trip, a French television station TF1 struck upon him. This crew are waiting for an ideal interviewee to ambush in the markets.
Piles of reporting about Yiwu have established Yiwu鈥檚 reputation as a catch-all purchasing playground, which interests many Frenchmen. This of course explains their coming.
Only at this point in time does Yann mention he was interviewed by an Italian TV station the other day.
There are built-in E-business centers in many markets designed for businessmen giving and receiving information about merchandise.
As this land is populated by more and more foreigners, the
originally involuntary involvement into globalization will
transfer into a voluntary evolution, even though some old-style
prints and tracks of the cityscape remain. Yiwu is being equipped
with whatever is necessary to be an integral link in the global
logistics line, down to many detailed things like road signs,
and of course including the fundamental education problem.
Some foreigners come and help hasten the improvement of Yiwu鈥檚
cultural texture. Chouzhou High School serves as a basecamp in
the evenings where local businessmen are trained in practical
knowledge like foreign languages and computer skills for free.
Until now, over 30,000 locals have been trained here.
I am amazed at the energy and vitality shown here in Chouzhou High School both during the evenings and mornings. Jacob and his wife became teachers around two years ago. They have since far exceeded this role.
Jacob and his wife Rachel have been teachers for years. They used to run a school in Rachel鈥 s native home of Taiwan. Jacob is from America. They are both confirmed Christian believers and
practitioners, always ready to be on a journey of love and charity.
3 years ago, Rachel was touched by the newly erected New Grace
Church in Yiwu at first sight. Now, it can be a great sense of
self-fulfilment that kept them. Jacob was just awarded a Lake
Friendship prize for his outstanding teaching achievements.
Nicole from Australia and Carly from Wales are among 30 teachers
GAP project provided for this school. GAP project is an English
non-governmental association for youths to teach abroad before
their university lives.
Almost every weekend, Chinese teachers will come to visit
Jacob and Rachel. Regular cultural communications
ensure a smooth cooperation. For a change, sometimes
they will exchange lessons of Chinese and English.
From America through Taiwan to Yiwu, to get close to
the real life of people in trouble is their unfailing
pursuit. In their free time they will be present in the homes
of local families.
Hosting English corners, entertaining students and
Friends at home, giving lessons and speeches in some colleges
have made a full daily schedule beyond work for them.
To help Chinese teachers of English in their own high
school to improve their English skills is sometimes
listed on it. Jacob believes that only education can orientate
this business-oriented city wisely.
I want to check out, please.
Do you ever get that feeling that when faced to the million and one things to buy, you end up buying nothing or only a few purchases. Well, it has been my case here in Yiwu. Even though there are innumerable hotels in Yiwu, the occupancy rate is very very high. As I checked out just now, I noticed a German guy was checking into my old room. There are so many foreign businessmen here. Well, I am off home now. Thanks for watching this edition of Rediscovering China. I am Victoria Hamilton.
